J. Whitaker is a Fashion/Landscape/Architecture/Still Life photographer based in Los Angeles, CA whose work is inspired by desolation and the hypnagogic state of mind experienced when exploring the type of landscapes you'd only find in Arctic and Nordic regions. In her 4 years behind the camera, she has worked with a wide range of clients and publications: Bullett, Cereal, Dazed, Juxtapose, Rolling Stone, McQ/McQueen, and Stampd to name a few.
WHAT'S INSIDE YOUR LANGLY?
Sony A7RII, 24-70mm Zeiss, 55mm Zeiss, Canon 60D, 17-85mm, 50mm, iPhone 7Plus, Macbook Pro, rock samples from each location and usually a grip of different filters.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO EXPLORE?
I've become obsessed with Arctic and Nordic landscapes. The 1st time I went to Iceland, I had these overwhelming feelings of being dropped in the middle of an unknown planet where every detail was new and undiscovered, and I didn't want to return to what I knew. I'm constantly chasing desolate, far North places that attack me with a state of hypnagogia-where future meets past, and it feels like I'm actually traversing grounds from the Ice Age. [I want to shoot as many of these landscapes before they die]
WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION?
Obviously in nature, but I can really find inspiration anywhere. Being in tune with my surroundings has always been something I use in my work. Whether it's a material, strange color combinations from trucks driving by on the freeway, to imperfections, the details around me always make their way into my work. I also quite love being alone with my thoughts - solitude in silence - reflection as well as reading both help me get re-inspired if I ever feel stuck.
FILM VS DIGITAL?
Digital + lots of polaroids and disposable cameras
WHAT'S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE PHOTO?
I would say any from my Cereal story from Alaska.
